Gerald W. Morton

In May, 2005, Gerald W. Morton retired after 25 years of teaching English at Winthrop College in South Carolina and Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama.  He immediately returned to his native North Carolina mountains where he began building a cabin in an isolated section of the state’s northwest corner, along both the Virginia and Tennessee borders.  His retirement ended abruptly in August when he accepted a visiting professorship at Emory & Henry College in Virginia, his undergraduate alma mater.  After two years at Emory & Henry, he plans to retire completely from teaching and pursue his writing, taking advantage of the rich culture and quiet lifestyle of his new home.  He is already enjoying returning to his roots, playing bluegrass music and contra dancing when the opportunities present themselves.

In recent years, Gerald Morton has turned from academic to commercial publishing.  In 2004 his Secrets of Success: Key Insights for Life’s Journey from the Great Western Myths (Oaklea Press) appeared.  In 2005 he released Moonshine and Madness: An Appalachian Rhapsody, a novella that celebrates the people and the rich culture of North Carolina’s mountains.

Most of Gerald Morton’s previous publications have appeared in academic journals or been released by scholarly presses.  He has written and published extensively on the literature and history of the English Civil War, which provides the setting and characters for Forever, Sarah. Although his academic interest in the period remains, his focus now is on mining this rich period for characters and conflicts that will feed his fiction.  Forever, Sarah is the first volume to result from this new-found passion.

Gerald Morton is a member of the Romance Writers of America Association, the Romance Writers of North Carolina Association, the North Carolina Writers Network, and the Appalachian Writers Association.  He is a frequent participant at the Harriette Austin Writers Workshop in Athens, Georgia.  He now lives a somewhat isolated life, though frequently visited by his daughters Katherine and Kimberly and his granddaughters Megan and Kelsey.
